Water Level

The reading comes from the U.S. Geological Survey gauge on the reservoir near Goodrich (site 08066190). Lake Livingston normally sits around 131 feet above sea level. When it drops a couple of feet below that, some ramps get shallow and stumps come closer to the surface.

Wind and Weather

Wind matters more than temperature on this lake. A steady south wind across 39 miles of open water stacks up waves fast, and mid-lake around the Onalaska peninsula takes the worst of it. If gusts are over 20 mph, stay in the coves or plan your run home with the wind behind you.

Thunderstorms: if you hear thunder, get off the water. Storms build quickly over the lake in summer afternoons.

Lake Safety Checklist

  • Life jacket for everyone on board. Texas requires kids under 13 to wear one while underway on boats under 26 feet.
  • Idle through coves and near the shore. Stumps are everywhere and many sit just below the surface.
  • Watch the wind forecast, not just the morning calm.
  • Tell someone where you're launching and when you'll be back.
  • Emergencies on the water: call 911 and give the nearest ramp, marina, or bridge.

Ramps at a Glance

When the lake is low, sheltered and deeper ramps win. Locals point to Beacon Bay when the state park ramps get shallow.
